Kwinana Book Club: Community Connections & Creating Change

The theme for this session is 'Connection, Country, and Community'.

Kwinana Library are bringing together curious minds to read, watch, and listen to authors, poets, artists, and creatives to advance our understanding and actions for a better world.

The first of these sessions will be held on Wednesday, November 26 from 6-7pm, click here to RSVP.

This is the first of six sessions with the book club spanning the course of a year. Each session will be facilitated by the Climate Justice Union and have a different theme to align with each of the Noongar Seasons. There is no expectation to attend every session, you are welcome to attend as many of the sessions as you wish.

Unlike some book clubs and reading groups we will approach these gatherings similar to a meal with friends. There are starter's mains, and dessert to choose from. You can read/watch/listen to one resource, but you are welcome to consume them all, as well as make your own suggestions for content to include.

Suggested materials for Kambarang's session are:

Starters -Noongar seasons: Kambarang - ABC News and Message from the Ngurra Palya by Ambelin Kwaymullina (poem)

Mains - Ni! Means listen (podcast), The Carers of Everything (moondang-ak Kaaradjiny) by Noel Nannup (book) and Living on Stolen Land by Ambelin Kwaymullina (book)

Desserts - Float by Cassie Lynch, Mammung (film), and SYNERGIES: Walking Together - Belonging to Country (video)

Other books, stories, podcasts or films that suit the theme:

We acknowledge that we begin our work as The Climate Justice Union on the Boodja (land) of the Wadjuk people of the Noongar Nation. We honour the Wadjuk people and their kin in other Nations and Country across these lands and waters, who have always cared for this place and all who lived here.

We acknowledge First Nations Elders past and present, and acknowledge that those of us living here, who came from across the seas, live on land that was taken, stolen. We acknowledge the responsibility that comes with this understanding and that we personally and collectively benefit from this theft.

As such, we all have a responsibility to decolonise ourselves, our lives and work, and to heal the harm these oppressive systems have inflicted.

We are a community union and do not cover you in your workplace. All Climate Justice Union members are also encouraged to join the relevant industrial union. Click here to find your industrial Union.
